A2K is an acronym for “America to Korea,” and the show is produced by both JYP Entertainment and Republic Records. With plans to debut a girl group at the end of 2023, JYPE founder Park Jin Youngalso known as JY Parkdescribed that they were looking for “American talent who created a girl group through the K-Pop system.

Auditions will be held in Dallas, New York, Chicago, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. The selected members will attend a boot camp held in Los Angeles for a week, and the selected final candidates will fly to Korea to train at the JYP training center. From there, the trainees will go through the final debuting procedure and debut as a girl group.

The first episode aired on July 14, and girls from different experiences and backgrounds tried their chances to be in a K-Pop idol group.

The second episode was also filled with talented girls—but one of them caught the eyes of netizens. A 12-year-old Korean American contestant named Kayla Lee from Philadelphia entered the audition room nervously. She shared that she is bilingual in Korean and English, and JY Park said that this will be an advantage for her as a K-Pop artist.

She admitted that she started vocal training just a week before her audition and was mainly self-taught from watching videos. However, JY Park was impressed with her singing because of her breath support. He did not raise his chest while breathing, which is a bad habit for singers.

In addition, he made JY Park laugh because he suddenly stopped singing after the first chorus because, according to him, that’s what “usually” happens when auditioning.

When it came to the dance part of the audition, Kayla expressed her nervousness and informed JY Park that she only learned the choreography for a few days, so she wasn’t comfortable with it yet. JY Park made him believe that it was okay and that he was just looking for potential. Despite her seemingly nervous comment, she danced confidently and wasn’t distracted when her headband fell off.

He made JY Park laugh again when he suddenly stopped after the first paragraph because he knows most judges tell you to stop after a paragraph.

JY Park pointed out that she doesn’t have much experience in dancing and has a long way to go, but she believes she will become a good dancer if she practices.

You still have a long way to go especially with dancing… but if you practice, I think you’ll be good at dancing. Your height allows you to perform very well. You have long legs and long arms, which help the movements appear larger.

He also praised her drive and intelligence in researching everything about her passion.

You have potential in singing and dancing but what impresses me the most is your drive and your motivation. I felt your passion. Also, how smart you are in pursuing that passion.

—JY Park

This compliment brought Kayla to tears as she worried about her dancing skills.

JY Park was not the only one who was impressed with Kaylee’s audition. The comment section was filled with praise from all the contestants, especially Kaylee. Many netizens admired her drive and talent at a young age, and some mentioned that she has the potential to be the next “it” girl in K-Pop. Some have speculated that she may need to practice a bit more before debuting—perhaps with JYPE’s next girl group.
