The trio was seen in a recent YouTube video discussing the lyrics to their song “One For Me.” The song depicts a male protagonist harboring romantic feelings for a female friend, who, in turn, seeks comfort from her after a breakup. This prompted debate as to whether it was appropriate for the main character to express his romantic feelings at this time.

Before long, the members find themselves taking opposing sides. Taemin believes that the girl’s act of calling the main character for comfort is a form of flirting, suggesting that boys and girls can’t just be friends. Key, on the other hand, disagreed based on his close friendship Girls’ Generation‘s Taeyeon.

Taemin: But she calls saying she broke up crying. He was sobbing and saying, ‘Comfort me.’ That, I think is self-indulgent.

Key: huh? He may not have meant it.

Taemin: I never thought boys and girls could be friends.

Key: I can even take a half body bath with Taeyeon.

After the clip was posted on Twitter, it created a wave of backlash against Taemin, with some netizens criticizing his views. One user wrote, “Taemin just gave me the craziest ick what is this,“As one opened,”The ‘boys and girls can be friends’ discourse lives on in the minds of men who are capable of viewing women only as potential romantic interests.”

However, dedicated fans were quick to rush to Taemin’s defense. They pointed out that Taemin doesn’t necessarily reflect his personal views but just embodies a character who hates relationships from the song they’re discussing. Taemin himself admitted in the video that he opposes all relationships just for the sake of discussion.

SHINee fans even said that it was common for Taemin to go against Key’s opinions, often “trolling” him for comedic effect. One fan explained the clip calling it “stupid, staged conversation.

Another corroborated this view, adding that others should watch the entire video before jumping to conclusions.

As debates on such topics continue to emerge, it is important to understand the context in which they are made. It appears that Taemin’s comments may have been misunderstood, as his fans believed that he was just playing a character for the purpose of discussion.
