Aespa Winter Is So Shy To The Point Where She Can’t Go Shopping Without Her AirPods

Who knew that someone who performed in front of thousands of fans could be so shy?

Aespa‘s Winter recently shared a fact about her past that contradicts her image today: she used to be extremely shy.

In an episode of Leemujin Servicea talk show where the singer-songwriter Lee Mujin talked to various musicians, Winter appeared as a guest and sang a few songs live. He started with an acoustic version of aespa’s “I’m Unhappy”, which showcased his undeniable vocal talents.

Between songs, Winter and Lee Mujin talked about his career. Amazed by her powerful voice, Lee Mujin asked her if it was true that she wanted to be an idol singer since she was young. Winter confirmed that it was true, but was too embarrassed to admit it at the time.

Yes, deep inside my heart, I really wanted to be an idol but since I am very introverted, I could not say that I wanted to be an idol. I just said too much that I want to be an idol.

She went on to have SM Entertainment cast her in a dance festival, and it was only after she was cast that she admitted to her mother for the first time that she wanted to be a singer.

So first, I was cast in a dance festival. After being cast, I told my mom that I was cast and she asked me if I wanted to do it, and I said, ‘Actually, I want to be a celebrity…’

Lee Mujin was surprised by his introverted personality and first confided his dream to his mother after being scouted. Winter then shared that she was very introverted when she was younger—to the point where she couldn’t stand up to press the button to signal to the bus driver that she needed to get off the bus.

Even though I was on the bus, I couldn’t press the button [to get off the bus]. I seem to get attention, so I wait until someone gets off the bus at the next stop and get off with them.

Lee Mujin understands that there are people who find any kind of attention scary and says that some people even make it to the last stop because they can’t push the button. Winter shared that she experienced the same, except her stop was near the last stop, so it wasn’t much of a detour.

My neighborhood is a few stops before the last stop, so I go to the last stop… often.

After laughing together at her shyness, Winter admits that she’s become more introverted as she’s gotten older. However, many of his introverted tendencies remain, and he shared a truth about himself that he had never revealed before: he can’t stop without Airpods.

But it got a little better as I got older… Actually, it’s the first time I’ve said this but I can’t go shopping without my AirPods. You know how [the staff] come to you to help you? If they come up and ask me, ‘Are you looking for something?’ I’m really leaving.

— Winter

Of course, he didn’t leave right away because that would be rude. Instead, he browsed a bit more, said his goodbyes, and left. To avoid such situations, Winter has to insert his AirPods. He admitted that if he had AirPods, he could press the button before getting off the bus because the earphones helped him feel alone and away from the rest of the world.

How does he perform and dance on stage, then? Fascinated by her shyness, Lee Mujin asks her how she got the confidence to join a dance competition show when she was young. Winter shared an interesting opinion that, for her, dancing is less “embarrassing” than singing on stage.

Actually, it might sound weird too, but I feel less shy when dancing than when I sing… For dancing, you dance together [with other people] so the look is scattered. But in singing, it’s like you have to do it alone. And for dancing, it’s like you’re forced to do it [when others tell you], ‘Hey, you’re a great dancer!’ But in singing, you do it because you really want to.

Seeing Winter sing and dance flawlessly on stage as a member of the aespa with such charisma made one realize how shy he had been.

Even though she’s afraid to push buttons on the bus and doesn’t like shopping without her AirPods, Winter is a professional who owns the stage every time she performs—and she can perform confidently in front of thousands of people!
